The Art of Blogging

When i started this class i realized that i would not like the idea of blogging at all, i still dont. It seems like a huge waste of technology and time if people write aimlessly about the things that have happened in their life, hoping some other weirdo will read it. I think the idea of blogging for College Lit is a good idea however because it allows the students to interact with oneanother with the computer medium and it s just another way of learning. Once I have finished my time with College Lit, I will be happy for the day that I wont have to blog anymore

Final Projects

With the school year closing in upon us it has struck me that my final project for College Lit is due tommmorrow. Now this is a bit problematic is the sense that i have not started it. James, Rachel, Mark and I are going to be making a trailor for the play, True West. Its going to be interesting to seee what parts of the play we want to incoporate into this trailor. We definitely need a lot of toasters and toast to pull it off. Hopefully all goes well and we can ace this final project and get an A on it, ya dig.

Forever Be A Changed Man

When I first walked into College Lit I though that it was going to be a boring reading class. But as i slowly saw how Uncle Kunkle analyzed these text with so much passion and thought that i finally caught on to the fad of reading books. Uncle Kunkle has made a metaphorsis in my life to the point in which I will look at what i read in a different lense, gaining different perspectives and seeing the bigger picture of a novel. When i graduate from this high school i will forever be a changed man that will appreciate the deeper meaning of a text and be able hear multiple sides of the topic and produce an arguement with textual evidnce to back my reasons.

Vonnegut's Ways

When Mr. Kunkle presented the class with such high regard for Kurt Vonnegut and how he made Kunkle meet his future wife, I had huge expectations coming into Slaughterhouse-Five. It turns out that Kunkle it the hammer on the head. I love the way Mr. Vonnegut can portray his message in a way that isn't overdemanding on your vocabulary and that allows for an easy, free following read. He can really go into trememdous detail about the most unimportant details in this stories but manages to describe just enough of the important details to keep the story going.  Mr. Kunkle has definitely sparked my interest in Vonnegut's work and I want to start reading more from him, and maybe I can find my soul mate along the way.

The Longest Day

The war movie I chose was The Longest Day about D-Day and the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944, during World War II. The stories of multiple soliders throughout the invasion are told, from Allie paratroopers  parachuting into Ste. Mere Englise, covert American missions, to the stories of Axis soliders defending their homelands. This film tries to portray the true story of the historic start of US involvement in the fight in Europe against the Axis powers. The goals of this film was to show the stories from both sides of the war and how each were effected by this warefare. When you relate this movie to Slaughterhouse-Five you can see that it is very much a glorified version of war. Mary O'Hare would not like this movie because it roles big hollywood stars like John Wan and Henry Fonda. SShe would see that this film portrays these boys as old, war heros that never feel pain, which is the complete opposite of how warefare actually is.

Independent Project Proposal Troubles

As I sit here in Rachel Stetenfeld's basement thinking of ideas for our final project for college Lit, we have run into a lot of troubles. We want to have a group project because we can connect the great brain power among us to create an epic piece of awesomeness. The idea of being an outsider is circulating amongst the group and how each of us could take on some sort of metaphorsis in our act. I think it would have been a cool idea to have an entire class prjoect because Kunkle would take it easy on us and only grade one project.

Ohio State Sucks

Last Fall when the Badger football team was playing the top ranked team in the nation, Ohio State on a beautfiul saturday night, i was there. My brother and I scored two front row student section tickets  from a contest and went to the game and watched on with the other 80,000 peole in attendence as the Badgers went on to defeat the Buckeyes. I felt apart of history when I and everyone else rushed the field. I knew that this an incredible victory for Wisconsin and I felt like i was apart of the team passing the football players on the field and slapping their pads. As drunken collage students waved on the swinging field goal posts, I felt connected to the huge mob and the energy they had and I felt like a was apart of something really special.

Change

As we are just finishing up our metamorphasis book and disccussing the idea of change, I think it is only fitting to apply this idea of change to my conversion of high school to a college student. Hopefully I will not wake up one morning turned into a gigantic dung beetle, but i wonder how much I am going to change as a person when I move out on my own and meet new people. It might be a possibility that i wont even change at all, just continue to be a pretty normal guy with an extreme obsession with Seinfeld, who knows.  It is going to be a very sad next couple of weeks to realize that the journey will finally end and a new journey will start. It would be very interesting to look into the future and see all the metamorphosis that my peers will go through and see how they are different.

My Metamorphosis

As  I awake from a deep sleep, I awake to find myself transformed. I get out of my bed and walk to the kitchen. I hear my brother downstairs shuffling through the cupboards trying to find cereal for breakfast and i walk into the bathroom to take a shower. As I hoop out of the shower and dry off and put on my clothes I walk out of the room to see a stranger awaiting me at the door. He was the same height as I, and looked to be 18. With a sense of fear I blurt, "Who are you? What are you doing in my house?" But the stranger looks right back me with the same confusion on his face. As we stood staring at one another, i notice that my brother had stopped making noice downstairs. Who is this guy? Did he hurt my brother? As I try to come to some rational reason for this person to be standing right across from me, it hits me. Like a fastball to the side of the kidneys, I realized that i was staring back at my brother, but we were not the same. I had awoken to the reality that i was not an identical twin. I was just mark's brother, not twin brother. It took a moment for both of us to process we were actually two different people from different eggs and sperm. I could no longer look at my reflection without a mirror anymore. It was odd having this new sense of independency and the reality that i was no longer recognized as just the other half, i had a name that no one would get mixed up with, purely independent and on my own.

Daddy O'Malley

As we finish up our final dicussions for Fences, some themes we talked about were responibilities and family. We kept talking about how Troy is a father what he expects out of this kids and that made me think. How am I gonna be like when  I am a father? When   I first think about the idea of having Brian Jr. running around I think ill spoil him to the fullest. I will have him play a lot of sports and become the major athlete that i have was. But besides that i feel like I will be a very relaxed and easy parent who doesn't have many rules as long as they get their work done and is not thrown into jail. I think i will protective like Troy is, but if my son presents me with the opportunity to sign a paper that will allow him to play college football, i will sign it without second thought because I will rake in the crash from the big signing bonus he will get when he makes it into the pros.

Baseball and Literature

It is only fitting to be reading text in College Lit that relates to baseball at the same time that my baseball season is going on. When Troy relates back to his marital problems to a runner trying to steal second base is pretty awesome. I feel like Troy is really onto something when he has all these ties to the beautiful game. I feel like I can relate to Troy and references, not with marital problems of course, but with more simple problems in life. Baseball is a sport that has its peaks and valleys, just like in life especially in Troy's too. Life presents itself to you sometimes where you really need to pull through, like in the bottom of the 9th, 2 out and a full count. How do you react? You can either backdown from the challenge, or rise above yourself and beat all odds in both the game of life and baseball.

The Things You Learn From Uncle Kunkle

With having been in College Lit for a couple of weeks now and becoming exposed to new ideas and concepts, I realize that this is not your typical English course. I like how this course requires it's students to become more than just a reader that can respond with shallow yes or no questions to a story. No, College Lit is a lot more in depth than that. For example, when our class was reviewing Bartleby the Scrivener I was shocked to hear uncle Kunkle's analysis of the story. When he talked about how a major theme of the story dealt with becoming secluded and "putting up walls" around those in our society, it gave me a whole new perspective on how you can not only read a story for it's entertainment value but for a much more abstract/ moral backing to it as well which is a great skill that i wish to pick up from this class.

My name is Brian O'Malley. I am attending the univeristy of Oshkosh in the upcoming fall. I am currently uncertain of what i want to do with my profession so i guess i will just check all the options that are out there. My favorite book would have to be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I really enjoy all the lord of the Rings books as well but i like that one the most because it was the last one. My favorite band would be The White Stripes. I really enjoy listening to Jack White's guitar playing. He is a really edgy and awesome guitarist. But besides that i like any kind of music, even classical! So hopefully this will be a fun class and hopefully  i can read some awesome books.
